VOXEL MEN – SPEED CHARACTER BUILDING

While I’m trying to build some backgrounds as apartments, furniture, props, streets… for characters, I’ve also made some simple masculine characters, trying to make them as varied as I possibly can with so few detail.

Fun stuff!

Here’s 12 people, rendered with the cute little “export 2D” button. I’ll do some dogs and cats and pack everything in a .zip so anyone can tweak them.

VOXEL EARTH

I tried to make a cute nice Earth with Magica Voxel. I failed at making it… hm… Roundy?

So I took the least resistance path and made it hexaedrical, copying the awesome ideas  from Cubical Drift. The little elevation was taken from one of those excellent bump maps you can find around to make proper Earth models.

I exported the model to Blender 3D, to get fancy lights and transparent clouds. Also, I wanted an animated gif. I can make the model public if someone asks me, but it’s quite unprecise and it was made reaaaally fast. Do your own Earth, just for fun.

VOXEL WOMEN – SPEED CHARACTER BUILDING

I’ve been doing some human characters between projects and  trying to find the way to represent visually appealing people. By now, I’ve got some different women.

It’s really fun and speedy, once you get the basic shape.  I’ve tried to make them taller, shorter, with different skin colours and hairstyles. The real challenge is to give them as much personality as possible with a single voxel here and there.

Now I need some glasses, accesories and shoes. I used MagicaVoxel’s render engine, and it just looks great. But also, using Blender 3D for rendering is a delight.

The last girl in black and red is a portrait of my girlfriend. You’ll recognize her inmediately, if you stumble upon her.

I learnt that the great Ephtracy changed the site for the Magicavoxel project to:

4K VOXEL INDUSTRIAL PARK

Just what the title says.

I’ve created buildings enough to compose a small industrial park and render it in Blender 3D. It’s a bit tricky, but the results from the cycles renderer is so nice! I love the look of colored rubber you get just with a diffuse light.

I’m moving to make some residential buildings now, and maybe some skyscrapers.

4k factories

I’m quite fond of the silliest buildings, like the gas station on the left or the container yard, because it looks like a pile of pencil erasures. Also, the central factory named 7DRL, because it was made during the 7 Day Roguelike Challenge.

I should do some vehicles? Probably.

SOME INDUSTRIAL BUILDINGS

Magica Voxel has a really nice export feature. When used, you can use your designs in Blender 3D or your 3d soft of choice, to compose bigger scenes. I did a quick group of industrial warehouses, refineries and generic factories to try it

FACTORY yellow FACTORY silos 02 FACTORY silo 01 FACTORY green FACTORY grey FACTORY blueCONTAINER YARD

If you scale the models to 0.05, they fit perfectly into your blender 3d grid, and then it’s easy to just pile the model pieces together, and also control camera settings, render quality, etc.

Factory Composition

I guess I’ll mix the giant robots, soon or later. And it really needs some colorful blocks resembling cars and vehicles. But, who cares?

ROBOVOXEL LOVE

FORCE FIELD ROBOT

Voxels are specially suited to create that kind of cute mechanic look. They just look so adorable. You can sculp a Bloodthirsty Murderbot and still you’ll think “Aaaaaw, look at his little Death Ray, isn’t it lovely?

FIREBOT

Also, I love robots. Not realistic robots, they are boring. REAL robots. The ones that will never exist, with improbable designs, colorful, with a retro look.

FOURLEGGED BOTSPIDERBOTROBOWHEEL

So, while I’m still working on a clasic fantasy setting, skeletons, monsters, adventurers, etc. I’ve been also making some designs for robots. When they’re good enough or simply there’s plenty of them I’ll release the pack with images and .vox files, as well. In the meanwhile…

VOXEL SKELETON SET V.1

This is my first tileset: Basic skeleton characters, including warriors, hounds, horsemenskeletons, champions, sorcerer, concubine and king. It’s a static set, with no animations. Characters pose like chess pieces, so they’re intended for static art or roguelike game development.

http://opengameart.org/sites/default/files/VOXEL_SKELETON_PACK_V1.zip

Isometric 512*512px renders, in PNG with alpha channel. Created with the wonderful Voxel editor MagicaVoxel. You can get it here and give the author some love:

https://voxel.codeplex.com/

Also, the .zip includes the .vox files so you can modify them to your colour palette or edit weapons, details, etc. The license allows you to use this models for any project, included commercial purposes, as long as I’m credited and you work keeps the same license.

My plan is to build a full classic adventure tileset, with more undead, adventurers, props and scenarios, but that will happen slowly.
